Skills-based volunteering in action: How Campbell’s ScopeAthon helps nonprofits move from challenge to clarity

News

We believe community impact goes beyond financial contributions and traditional volunteerism. Last year we set a new goal: by the end of the 2029 fiscal year, we’ll provide the equivalent of $1 million in skills-based volunteering and pro bono consulting.

One way we’re bringing this commitment to life is through our annual ScopeAthona skills-based volunteering event designed to help nonprofit organizations solve complex challenges.

How the ScopeAthon volunteering model works

During ScopeAthon, nonprofit leaders work side-by-side with Campbell’s employees to identify the root cause of a challenge and develop a clear, actionable plan to address it. Employees with relevant skills and interests are paired with nonprofit teams accordingly.

Instead of producing a final deliverable in a single afternoon, ScopeAthon focuses on structured problem-solving and capacity-building. Together, nonprofit leaders and employee volunteers:

With guidance from our implementation partner, the Taproot Foundation, ScopeAthon helps nonprofits gain clarity and momentum, especially those with limited time or resources.

“The session made an impact with our nonprofit partner in a way that can drive results for the organization and build branding, marketing, and ultimately sales. It also genuinely made me feel proud to work for Campbell’s.”

EarthShare New Jersey needed a manageable communication plan. By the end of ScopeAthon 2026, the employee volunteer team delivered a plan outline and a tool to map future plans.

ScopeAthon 2026

This year, we hosted ScopeAthon at our headquarters in Camden, NJ, bringing together:

Working in small cross-functional teams, employees collaborated directly with nonprofit partners to diagnose challenges, brainstorm solutions, and develop a scoped plan tailored to each organization’s goals and capacity.

By the end of the day, every nonprofit walked away with actionable next steps they could immediately begin implementing. Taproot estimated that Campbell’s employees had provided more than $70,000 in cost savings* to the nonprofits.

“We had such a great, thoughtful and multi-disciplinary group. Their perspectives were incredibly helpful in supporting us with generating a plan for identifying a corporate sponsor, retaining new partners and identifying our value in this space.”

Continued pro bono partnerships

ScopeAthon doesn’t always end when the day does. Cathedral Kitchen, a longtime Camden neighbor, joined the event in 2025 hoping to strengthen its marketing to boost community engagement and donations. The ScopeAthon team spotted a clear starting point: a brand refresh.

That idea became a pro bono project outside of ScopeAthon, with Campbell’s designers partnering with Cathedral Kitchen through the fall and winter to redesign its logo and brand identity – including a special logo for its 50th anniversary.

Seeing the team return to ScopeAthon 2026 wearing shirts with the new anniversary logo was a full-circle moment, and a reminder of what sustained skills-based partnerships can unlock.

Building on Campbell’s commitment to community and skills-based volunteering

ScopeAthon is part of Campbell’s broader commitment to skills-based volunteering and community partnership. From career exploration opportunities for Camden students to long-term nonprofit collaborations, we continue to connect our people’s talents with community needs.

Together with our partners, we’re demonstrating how sharing professional skills with intention can help organizations grow and communities thrive.
