How we’re giving back for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Inclusion & Diversity

Each May, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a month that recognizes the contributions, influence, and culture of the AAPI community in the United States.

With the rise in incidents of racism, violence, and discrimination targeting Asian Americans, it’s critical for us to have open dialogues and come together in solidarity.

One of the ways we’re doing this is through our Asian Network Social Justice Fund, which was created in partnership with our Asian Network employee resource group, our Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) team, and the Campbell Soup Foundation. The Asian Network leadership team identified five organizations that live into the employee resource group’s mission of raising awareness, fostering education, and promoting equity and justice for all—and this month, the Campbell Soup Foundation will be matching all employee donations to the fund at 100%.

APIA Scholars

APIA Scholars is the U.S.’s largest non-profit organization devoted to providing greater higher education access for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.

“Asians are often seen as the ‘model minority’ in the United States—being able to succeed in the face of adversity. But with the rising gap between rich and poor Asian Americans since the 1970s, this fails to recognize those that are not as economically successful. We liked that APIA Scholars is supporting students by helping to fund higher education to further their career trajectory.”

– Dat Lai, Head of People Analytics, HR Services and Asian Network Lead

Asian Americans Advancing Justice

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC) is a group of organizations advocating for the civil and human rights of Asian Americans.

“As we witness a disturbing rise of anti-Asian discrimination, we feel it is crucial to support the work AAJC is doing in building awareness and creating solutions to fight anti-Asian racism, and also its advocacy and legal work.”

– Jenny Huang, Senior Associate Marketing Manager, Meals & Beverages and Asian Network Lead

Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund

Focused on protecting and promoting the civil rights of Asian Americans, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund does critical work, such as training students in public interest law, providing legal resources for community-based organizations, and litigating cases that have major impacts on the Asian American community.

“We included AALDEF because, this year, many of our employees have shared stories of the added fear, anger, and sadness they must carry knowing that their friends or family could be the next target of discriminatory, racist attacks.”

– Hao Wang, Scientist, Bakery R&D, Campbell Snacks and Asian Network Lead

Sakhi for South Asian Women

Sakhi—which translates to “woman friend” in Hindi—is an anti-domestic violence organization that works with the South Asian community in a survivor-led movement for gender-justice and to honor survivors of violence.

“Many South Asian women live and experience patriarchal family structures where they battle physical, emotional, mental, and economical abuse. This is where organizations like Sakhi step in and truly embody the role of a friend—as their name suggests—in educating, empowering, and advocating for victims.”

– Azalenah Shah, Senior Scientist, Campbell Snacks and Asian Network Lead

Ascend Foundation

Ascend’s professional development and career enhancement programs are geared toward Pan-Asian talent, and they strive to connect Pan-Asian leaders across industries through a network of seasoned professionals and emerging leaders. On the surface, Asian Americans seem to be doing well in corporate America, making up 12% of the professional workforce. However, research shows they’re the least likely to advance to become executives and are disproportionately under-represented in board rooms, occupying only 4.4% of board seats among all Fortune 1000 companies, with Asian women only occupying 1.47%.

“Supporting Ascend in our fund is in line with what we stand for in the Asian Network ERG, given its mission to elevate the impact of Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders and to create a more diverse pipeline of future leaders. Campbell has been supporting Ascend for the past 4 years and is a proud sponsor of their Philadelphia chapter.”

– Elizabeth Duggan, Senior Vice President, Transformation Office and Asian Network Executive Advisor

Part of our Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) Strategy is to strengthen our ally networks and the communities where we live and work through financial donations.

The Asian Network Social Justice Fund is one of six funds we have launched for employees. Other funds include our Black Resource Group Social Justice Fund, Campbell Administrative Professionals Social Justice Fund, Latino Network Social Justice Fund, Veterans Connection Fund, and our Women of Campbell Social Justice Fund.
