Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations

We’re proud to announce our new science-based targets (SBT) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our targets are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which defines and promotes best practices in emissions reductions. We’re proud to join more than 1,000 business and organizations worldwide committed to reducing our emissions and improving our environmental impact.

Setting our science-based targets

Last year, we announced our commitment to setting a science-based target (SBT) to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our own operations and in our supply chain. Since the announcement of our commitment, we’ve been hard at work baselining our Scope 3 emissions, developing our SBT and 2030 roadmap with the oversight of the Governance Committee of the Board of Directors, and securing approval from our Campbell Leadership Team and then the SBTi.

Our science-based targets

We’ve committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 42% by fiscal year 2030 from a fiscal 2020 base year. We have also committed to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution 25% within the same timeframe.

These targets are in line with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Climate science shows it is necessary to limit warming to 1.5 °C in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Our roadmap to reduce emissions

Our team put together a roadmap to help us achieve our goal. Within our new SBT, we’re focusing emissions reductions on ingredients, packaging, transportation, and our own operations. We expect to expand the use of renewable energy in our operations, while continuing to use energy more efficiently. We’re also evaluating opportunities to electrify some of our production equipment.

In our supply chain, we plan to reduce emissions from key ingredients including wheat, proteins, and chocolate. We’re also reducing emissions in transportation through more efficient routes and through packaging by increasing our use of recycled content.

Why setting an SBT is important to us

We strive to build a resilient food system through our own operations and by helping our suppliers adapt to and mitigate climate impacts. Climate science shows that we need to halve global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Food companies have an important role to play in reducing emissions, and we’re committed to doing our part.
