Meet 3 of our wheat farmers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Sustainability

Wheat is a key ingredient in many of our snacks, including Goldfish® crackers and Pepperidge Farm® bread. Meet three of the farmers in our program with Ardent Mills, one of our wheat suppliers!

Sal Tedesco: A third-generation farmer turning food waste into healthier soil

Sunnyside Farms in Millville, N.J.

Sal Tedesco is a third-generation farmer who still farms on the same land his grandfather did back in 1900.

About the farm: Sal grows wheat and soybeans on 1,000 acres of land and incorporates regenerative agricultural practices into his farming.

Dig deeper: For example, Sal recycles fruit and vegetable waste collected from other businesses by applying it into his farm fields. Every day, he composts about 100 tons of organic waste, which helps build healthy soils and grow better crops.

Cathy Watts and Ann Marie MacDougall: Sisters continuing a legacy growing for Pepperidge Farm

MacDougall Farms in Bangor, PA

About the farm: MacDougall Farms is run by sisters Cathy and Ann Marie. They took over after their father, Barry MacDougall, passed away in 2021, and they now carry on his legacy farming in Bangor, PA.  Their farm is enrolled in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and uses many regenerative practices including no-till farming and cover crops.

Supplying our snacks: The wheat grown at MacDougall Farms is milled into flour for our Pepperidge Farm crackers and snacks at a nearby mill owned by Ardent Mills.

George Cassady: Regenerative farming rooted in family tradition

Cassady Farms in Monroeville, NJ

George Cassady grew up farming, and his relationship with Campbell’s runs deep in the family. His great-grandfather started the farm in 1895 and while they have always grown vegetables, they began focusing on growing them for us beginning in the 1960s.

About the farm: Today, George grows 40 different crops including squash, tomatoes, watermelon and peppers, allowing diverse rotations that are good for the soil. He also utilizes regenerative agriculture practices like minimizing plowing to avoid disturbing the soil.

Supplying our snacks: In addition to the produce they grow, Cassady Farms also farms wheat that is milled into flour that goes into Goldfish.

Through long-standing partnerships with farmers like these, we’re helping grow quality ingredients in our food while supporting more sustainable farming practices for the future.

We’re working toward a healthier environment.
